Part time philosopher, full time coder. I dabble in many things. One day I will probably write half a novel about it.

I'm not much of a photographer, but I like to play one on Instagram.

In Memory of Benton Kerchner Jones

My dear friend Ben passed away unexpectedly this week in his Manhattan apartment at the young age of 28. As I sit here, listening to his last Spotify playlist, I’m overwhelmed with trying to imagine the world without his presence.

Ben, you are one of the most amazing humans I’ve ever met. I have you to thank for so many colorful adventures that shaped me into the person I am today. From discovering the mischievous joy of our first successful computer hack, to staying up until sunrise just to appreciate the beauty and silence of those moments when the rest of the world slept. Your sense of humor, unbound by any restraint, is a universal force worthy of its own field of study.

I will never forget all of the plans we hatched. The sites we almost launched, the clubs we almost started, the projects we almost built. Your ability to think outside the box is so profound, so effortless, and so intoxicating. You lived life with an intensity that is inspiring to us all. You understand that above all else life is precious and not to be wasted, that it must be experienced from every possible angle.

Your impact on this world is immeasurable. I refuse to write in the past tense; you will always be alive in our hearts and minds. Until we meet again, may you rest, truly, in peace. I love you man.

Caine’s Arcade

via Mark Frauenfelder at BoingBoing:

Nirvan says: “I just finished this short film about a 9-year-old boy’s elaborate DIY cardboard arcade. Caine made his arcade using boxes from his dad’s used auto parts store. He hadn’t had many customers, so we set up a fun flashmob to make his day, and filmed his response.

My favorite part:

…I asked Caine how it worked and he told me that for $1 I could get four turns, or for $2 I could get a Fun Pass with 500 turns. I got the Fun Pass.

Google’s New Glasses And The War On Serendipity

via Linda Holmes at NPR:

It is fundamentally opposed to the idea of figuring anything out for yourself. It advances the notion that we are entitled to a noncorporeal, completely nonpersonal presence we talk to like a person (“Where’s the music section?”) so we don’t have to expend the mental energy to suffer the indignity and inconvenience of potentially taking a wrong turn in a bookstore.

It’s inevitable that stuff like this will be on the consumer market one day. We might as well sort out the philosophical implications now before we’re all incapable of even the most basic tasks without the help of technology.

Nuda Veritas, ‘LIVE’ Album Review

by Dan Bolles at Seven Days:

Pulling largely from Verses of Versus, it’s a chilling work that showcases her songwriting in a stripped-down setting, and sacrifices some of that record’s head-spinning experimentation in favor of stark intimacy.
